Fern Hanlin Coberly's Golden Gems

              August, 2003

                                  A - ugust is a month
U - used to wrap up summer's fun
G - one are the carefree days
U - nder the blazing sun
S - ummer tans will soon fade
T - ogether with all our summer ways

August is a perfect month for ridding ourselves of  unwanted
'things'. Not only in our minds but in our daily living.  It is not
easy to destroy old keepsakes, greeting cards, pictures, and notes
from friends, but there comes a time when we must.  We do not
wish to leave "our" memories for someone else to sort through.
So, I'm taking a deep breath, closing my eyes and parting with
some precious 'things' that mean nothing to others.  The memories
will remain and I will have more room to store recent ones.

MENTAL CLEANSING

Do we clean our mental house as well
As we do our home each day?
Do we allow dust and dirt to gather in
The corners hidden away?

Do we find it impossible to throw away
Thoughts that insist on staying,
Which warp our way of thinking,
And show our lack of praying?

Is it difficult for us to know
Which are good and which are trash?
Only the Holy Spirit can help us
Empty the unwanted cache.

When we meditate upon God's Word
And take the time to pray,
He will let us know what to keep
And what to throw away.

I know He'll tell us to do away
With greed and pride.
When we turn it all over to Him,
It will be easy for us to decide.

We must keep in our mind
Nothing but the best.
After a thorough cleansing,
We will find perfect rest.

"We do not keep the outward form of order,
where there is deep disorder in the mind."
~ Shakespeare ~
